Very Good (85)

Almost all the major Port houses made in 1920. I have tasted only the Sandeman, and in early 1990 it had evolved into a delicious tawny.

Most of the leading houses declared. They were said to be delicate and well made, though I never tasted a bottle.

Noval (A.J. da Silva) is said to have shipped a few pipes. It is over the hill now.

I have never tasted a bottle, but suspect they will be fading by now. Nearly all the major houses declared.

Offley Forrester was the only house to declare.

Kopke and Ramos Pinto produced some vintage Port.
Superb Concentration, Balance, Breeding                                           Classic (100)
The 1927 vintage was phenomenal. It was called light and early maturing by some when it was first sold, and houses made two or three times the quantity of their normal declaration, some made more than 40.000 cases, The 1927s are stupendous across the board. Vintages like this come only once a century. To have such large quantities of such great wines is unbelievable. There was so much 1927 vintage Port for sale that some London wine merchants used it for their ordinary ruby blends.

I tasted eleven 1927s in late 1989 and a few more in early 1990, and all of them were superb. All but three scored 90 or above. They are classy, superbly balanced wines with wonderful, concentrated fruit flavours. They are ageing incredibily well and should easily make their 100th birthday next century. Every house was a star in this vintage, although there may be bottle variation due to storage conditions and other factors.

I have never tasted a bottle; however, records indicate that the growing season was very good. Apparently Offley Forrester declared.
