Founded in 1797, Gould Campbell became part
of the Symington family's holding in the early 1960s. For most of
its existence, Gould Campbell was a brand of Cloude & Baker,
Port shippers and wine merchants. During world War II, Offley Forrester
managed Gould Campbell for Cloud & Baker. Offley bought the
stocks and brand after the war.
Peter Symington said
that his family hopes "that clients will buy the vintage Ports
of Gould Campbell after they buy Graham or Taylor".
Considering the excellent quality and good value of wines
like the 1977 and 1983 Gould, it may be wiser for clients simply
to buy the Gould and forget the others.
It is difficult to pin
down where the wines come from to make up the vintage blends of
Gould Campbell. The Symingtons say that this wine is more a creation
of blending room than of any particular vineyard or quinta.
Nonetheless, a hight proportion of the wines comes from the Rio
Torto area. Production averages betwen 4,000 and 8,000 cases.
