Gilberts Port
The name Gilberts appears associated to Port Wine for the first time about one century ago. Karl Gilbert, born 1875 in Metz, Lorraine, arrived still in his youth to Oporto, birth place of his mother, belonging to a family devoted for several generations to the Port Wine trade. So, it happened that Karl Gilbert, working at his uncle's reputed firm, soon had access to all "secrets" concerning Port Wine, rapidly becoming a respected expert in this field. Thanks to his remarkable personality, Karl Gilbert was honorary consul of the Austrian-Hungrian Empire, in Oporto, until the end of the First World War.

His two sons, Helmut and Arnold, grown up in the Port Wine branch, registered, in their father's memory, at the beginning of the fifties, the mark "GILBERTS PORT" and purchased, together with a cousin, the firm Alcino Correa Ribeiro, established 1914, the main exports of which were destined for the United Kingdom and which was particularly known for its stocks of several hundred casks of old Ports.

In 1962, this firm's name turned into GILBERTS & CA., LDA., having then started the export also for other countries, mainly Germany, France, Holland, Italy, etc.

Following the ancient family tradition, GILBERTS & CA., LDA. devotes itself nowadays, as in the past, exclusively to the production and the commerce of high quality Port Wines.

10 years old
Browner than the sister company's (Burmester's) example; tawny with a broad orange rim. Very full and spirity nose of wood smoke and dried orange peel. Very sweet with only just balanced acidity; smoky character coming through strongly on the palate with a long, alcoholic finish.
20 years old
Pale orange with a broad mature rim. Powerful smoky nose with orange and dried orange peel hints. Mature but not caramelly. Very sweet with marmalade-like fruitiness, cooked peel rather than nuts. Good, long finish, but not as concentrated as the Burmester equivalent.
Ruby, White and Romarigo
These Ports are aged in oak casks to produce wines of fine balance and flavour, and usually bottled after 3 years. Grown further down the Douro river than Vintage Ports, they are blended for early maturation. The sweet White Port is produced exclusively from white grapes, delicious lightly chilled as aperitive or dessert wine.

Dry Tua
This is a very dry white Port produced exclusively from white grapes wich has achieved its complete fermentation, giving this wine its special character. Highly recommended as an aperitive wine, to be served slightly iced.

LBV
Another traditional LBV, in need of decanting since it has thrown a great deal of sediment. Medium to deep garnet in colour, quite mature in appearence, with a full spice and raisin nose, perhaps just a little coarse, but quite complex. Very sweet with soft tannins and balanced acidity.
