One of the greatest of the pioneering Port firms is
Dow's, established in 1798 by a Portuguese merchant, Bruno da Silva. In 1877 his
descendents acquired another shipper and the firm soon became one of the largest and most
famous shippers in Oporto. In 1882, Andrews James Symington arrived in Oporto from
Scotland. Within a few years he was working in the Port trade and in the early part of
this century he become a partner in Dow's. Today 8 of his descedents own and run the
company. For nearly a century 4 generations of Symingtons have carefully nurtured the
great reputation of Dow's Ports.

Dow's Ten and
twenty Years Old Tawny Port are recognised for their outstanding quality. Made
slightly drier than most, they are consequently more elegant. Dow's twenty Years Old is
often judged as the finest tawny of all. The Twenty Years Old Tawny have win the Silver
Medal "Wine Challenge" 1996
